ABC gravel and #57 stone are both common on excavation projects, but they behave very differently. Choosing the right material can affect compaction, drainage, maintenance and how well a driveway or work area performs over time.

What is ABC gravel?

ABC, often called crusher run or crush-and-run, contains a mixture of aggregate sizes plus fines. When graded and compacted correctly, the fines fill the spaces between larger stone and create a dense surface. That makes ABC a common choice for gravel driveways, road bases, parking areas and construction access.

What is #57 stone?

#57 stone is a clean aggregate without the same concentration of fines. Water can move through the voids more easily, making it useful around drainage systems, behind certain retaining applications, around pipes and in areas where a clean stone layer is preferred.

Which is better for a driveway?

For most finished gravel road surfaces, a compactable material such as ABC is often preferred because it can lock together. Clean #57 may move more under turning tires if used as the entire driving surface. However, every site is different, and base conditions and drainage matter as much as the top layer.

Drainage matters more than the stone name

No aggregate will permanently solve a driveway where runoff is concentrated down the travel lane. Before adding material, the road should be evaluated for crown, pitch, ditches, culverts and stable outlets.
