A gravel driveway usually washes out because water is being allowed to travel down the road instead of leaving it. Adding more stone can improve the surface temporarily, but if the grade and drainage stay the same, the next heavy rain may cut the same channels again.

The driveway is lower than the shoulders

When repeated traffic, erosion or previous grading leaves the road surface concave, water becomes trapped in the driveway. The runoff follows the travel path downhill and gains speed. A durable repair often starts by lifting and reshaping the road so water can shed toward a ditch or stable outlet.

Ditches and culverts are not moving enough water

Roadside ditches, swales and culverts need to intercept runoff before it reaches vulnerable parts of the driveway. A clogged culvert or shallow ditch can redirect a large amount of water onto the gravel surface. The gravel is not matched to the job

ABC or crusher run contains a blend of larger aggregate and fines that can compact into a dense driving surface. Clean stone such as #57 has less fine material and drains differently. The right choice depends on whether the goal is a compacted road surface, drainage layer or erosion-resistant stone placement.

Steep sections need frequent water exits

On a long mountain driveway, water should not be allowed to build speed for hundreds of feet. Grade changes, turnouts, ditches and culverts can move runoff off the road at controlled points.

What a proper repair looks like

A driveway assessment should look at the entire path of water from uphill areas to the final outlet. The repair may include grading, adding material, correcting crown or cross-slope, cleaning or building ditches, installing culverts and stabilizing discharge areas.
